St. Petersburg’s Salvador Dalí Museum has always been one of our favorite reasons to cross the bay, and the debut of their Pablo Picasso exhibit offers an unprecedented experience for the entire Tampa Bay Area. The exhibit is in its final weeks, ending on May 22. For a limited time, The Dali is open extended hours on Saturday. The museum is open 10 am – 8 pm every Saturday from March 19th – May 21st.

One of the country’s rarest and most exciting exhibits is now open at The Dali Museum. Picasso and the Allure of the South presents 79 paintings, drawings, and collages by the celebrated artist Pablo Picasso, half of which have never before been seen in the United States.

Focusing on the region that inspired so much of his work, Picasso and the Allure of the South explores the influence of southern Europe on Picasso’s revolutionary art. The exhibit was organized in collaboration between The Dalí and the Musée national Picasso-Paris, which holds the most significant collection of the artist’s works in the world.

Picasso and the Allure of the South represents an exceedingly rare opportunity to experience masterworks by the artist through the innovative lens of place and cultural context,” said Dr. Hank Hine, Executive Director of The Dalí.

Some of Picasso’s most celebrated creations will be a part of the collection, including the canvasses Portrait de Madame Rosenberg et sa fille (1918), Femme au buffet (1936), and Le Baiser (1969).

The exhibit is a journey through Picasso’s personal and professional lives

Of course, the exhibit features far more than just a single type of work, showcasing what the museum calls “an exceptional selection of portraits, still lifes, figural studies, and landscapes that reflect his career-long rapport with the cultures of his homeland and southern France while incorporating historical photographs that provide candid glimpses of Picasso in his series of studios in the south.”

Building upon The Dalí’s extensive use of technology to create an immersive artistic experience, accompanying the exhibit is the interactive YOUR PORTRAIT experience. Using artificial intelligence, museumgoers can have their picture taken and watch as the machine learning program transforms their photo into a Cubist portrait that they can then have sent to them to keep forever.

This presentation of Picasso and his work offers the opportunity to truly see the beauty of Europe through the master artist’s eyes, while also giving patrons a window into the life of the artist himself. Picasso and the Allure of the South is open from January 29-May 22 of 2022, and access to the special exhibit is included with the price of admission to the museum.

In addition, The Dalí also has several other exhibits currently running, including Dalí’s Masterworks in Augmented Reality, the Dalí Lives artificial intelligence experience, Dreams of Dalí in virtual reality, and the annual student surrealist art exhibit. Online timed tickets are required and can be purchased at TheDali.org.
